A graduate of Oklahoma State University with a bachelor’s degree in marketing, Jeffrey “Jeff” Ostrander is a Certified Financial Planner® practitioner and CEO/President of a financial advisory firm in Kansas. In his free time, Jeff Ostrander participates in events that raise awareness of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).

A disease that severely affects the spinal cord’s motor nerve cells, SMA impairs muscles and can lead to complete respiratory failure. Without proper respiratory support, 100 percent of those born with the disease will die by the time they are 24 months old.

However, surgery and noninvasive ventilation procedures can help children suffering from SMA live into adulthood, while technological advances have made it possible for children to receive care at home. This has made family members central to supporting the complex needs of children with SMA.

Family members must be trained by professional caregivers to manage the child’s mechanical ventilation. Continued training is vital, but time is often limited due to constraints stemming from round-the-clock care.

To help caregivers improve their skills and education in caring for SMA patients, New Jersey’s BAYADA Home Health Care Pediatric Specialty Practice created a portable electronic simulation program. In the six months that followed training at a BAYADA lab, all the respondents were able to properly assist with at-home tracheostomy emergencies.
